Scopello Villas and Holiday Apartments

If you're of the mindset that first impressions count, be prepared to be swept away by your first glimpse of Scopello. A traditional hamlet perched on the coast, the white stone buildings are built around a majestic, 18th century baglio, its spacious, shady courtyard the epicentre of village life.

Shuttered windows and dancing flowers line the quiet streets, contributing to a look so picture-perfect it could be the set of a sophisticated Italian movie – its no surprise this tiny community was chosen as the setting for the stylish Hollywood movie, Ocean's 12.

Things to do in Scopello

Villa Bougainvillea
Villa Bougainvillea in Scopello

Scopello is the ideal place to absorb village life over a coffee or ice-cream, but its crown jewel is the idyllic, rocky cove that has carved out a place in the cliffs.

Here, the crystal clear blue of the Mediterranean laps a pebble shore, providing the perfect environment for swimmers to cool down in the hot, Sicilian sun.

Perfectly situated to access the nearby Zingaro Nature Reserve as well as other beaches further afield, Scopello villas and apartments provide a relaxing base to explore the beauty of Sicily's north-west region.

For nature lovers

The craggy coastline of Scopello and the surrounding areas offer spectacular natural vistas that are the main draw for visitors. There is a diving centre based in the village if you wish to explore beneath the surface of the glassy bay, and the main beach is a delight for swimmers and snorkellers with its tranquil, clear waters and tiny fish flickering amongst the rocks. A small admission fee is charged for the use of the stone beach by the hotel which was previously the old tuna fishery – Scopello tonnara.

Arrive early to secure a good sunbathing spot.

Zingaro Nature Reserve
Zingaro Nature Reserve in Sicily

Scopello is one of the closest towns to the breath-taking Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve, a 7km stretch of protected parkland characterised by towering limestone cliffs sloping down to white pebble beaches and stunning aquamarine waters.

The well-maintained coastal paths reveal views that are among the best in the Mediterranean and you can expect to encounter a wealth of bird species including eagles, seabirds, partridges and falcons. Additionally, over 650 species of plants and flowers thrive here with colourful orchids, crocuses and various other wild flowers providing a splash of colour to the grassy slopes.

Be prepared to tackle the walking trails with comfortable footwear, sun protection and plenty of water.

Foodie heavens

Epicurean travellers will be in seventh heaven on the shores of Sicily. Your choice of Scopello villa or apartment will position you a short drive from the larger town of Castellammare del Golfo where markets to stock up your self-catered accommodation can be found. However, there are a few options for brunching, lunching and dining out in tiny Scopello itself – particularly around the main square where you can relax and enjoy the view. Alternatively, pack a picnic to enjoy at Lo Zingaro nature Reserve or at one of the seaside coves along the coast.

Castellammare del Golfo
Castellammare Port in Sicily

Visit the local bakery for warm, seasoned bread - the pane cunzato – which makes unforgettable rustic sandwiches of tomatoes, creamy sheep’s milk cheese and salty anchovies. Expect to encounter wholesome pasta dishes flavoured with colourful, seasonal vegetables as well as fresh-from-the sea fish, squid and prawns and a range of home-made cakes and Sicilian ricotta-based desserts.

Beach bums

Scopello's surrounds make the perfect match for groups or couples that are torn between active interests and lounging on beaches. In fact, Lo Zingaro Nature Reserve boasts some of the most idyllic beaches in Sicily with a succession of bays named Cala Capreria, Cala Beretta, Cala Marinella, Tonnarella dell'Uzzo and Cala della Disa. As a general rule, the further you walk, the quieter the beaches become – most of the year it is possible to even find yourself a deserted strip by the sea where you can play out all those Robinson Crusoe fantasies.

Where next in Sicily?

The north-west of Sicily is often thought of as the 'real' Sicily, set apart from the more touristy areas. From tiny Scopello you can journey down to the charming seaside town of Castellammare del Golfo with its bustling fishing port and castle topped hillside.

Try your luck on a fishing trip or simply sample the succulent seafood on offer and explore the beach at Guidaloca, which has excellent access for visitors with its own transport and offering family-friendly amenities such as a pool for young children and comfortable sun loungers.

Alternatively, take a boat to the other side of Lo Zingaro Nature reserve and you'll find yourself in the popular San Vito Lo Capo. This resort town's long, sandy beach is peppered with palm trees and plays host to numerous festivals throughout the year including the Cous Cous Fest, a celebration of Mediterranean gastronomy; an international kite festival; and a summer music festival.

Choosing a self-catering Scopello holiday provides access to all the treasures of Sicily's wild west whilst retaining that home-away-from-home feeling.
