The Marsa Allah (port of god) or Marsala as it is known today is the name of the Carthaginians town founded in 397 BC. Marsala is particularly famous for it’s wine and is the wine growing centre of the West of Sicily. The town has many a winery and a wine growing school. It is flanked by the Stagnone Lagoons a Marine area with salt pans and a shallow sandbank which allows you to walk from the mainland to the ‘Isola Grande’ off the coast.
