Why stay in Favignana?

The vibrant history of Sicily infuses the shores of Favignana. The island's rocky landscape reveals numerous caves dating back to Paleolithic times, where residents later hid from pirate attacks. The historical ruin, Fort of Santa Caterina, built by the Arabs and Normans to fortify the island, stands on a hillside, presiding over the main town. Additionally, it is possible to view the traditional tonnara or tuna fishery, an industry which has played a pivotal part in Favignana's economy over the years, along with the impressive limestone quarries that pepper the north-east coast.  One of the key elements of Favignana's charm is the easy-going ambience, characteristic of traditional Sicilian life. Despite the accessible nature of the island group, they have escaped the hefty influx of tourist development; Favignana holidays allow total immersion in local life as you wander the pedestrianised streets and watch the world go by from the shady piazzas.

The Egadi Sea

The breath-taking colours of the Egadi Sea are the stuff postcards are made of. Why not organise a boat trip at the harbour to explore other parts of the island, secret beaches or the neighbouring islands? Ask at one of the tourist offices in town for your choice of excursion – snorkelling and diving opportunities abound in these crystal-clear waters, or perhaps you would rather enjoy fishing for your supper?

For those who prefer to remain on dry land or swim from the shore, Favignana plays host to a variety of little beaches – many are difficult to reach, but that is all part of the adventure. Cala Rossa is a popular swimming bay whilst the nearby Grotta del Bue Marino is one of Favignana's best kept secrets due to its stunning, clear water and hidden locale. Sandy options include Cala Azzurra and Lido Burrone, a particular favourite of those with young children.

Explore the town

Favignana apartments and villas are based in and around the main town, amongst picturesque, traditional buildings as well as a smattering of shops and places to eat and drink. It is also possible to discover the key historical sights on foot although bicycles can be hired with ease. Drop by the Florio Tonnara, the old tuna fishery recently restored to showcase Favignana's history of tuna fishing.

If you happen to visit in May or June, you may witness La Mattanza, a traditional event where the tuna are trapped and then bludgeoned to death in a rather gory fashion. The key historical monument of Favignana is the Castello di Santa Caterina, an abandoned and ruined fortress perched high on the hill. It is worth making the climb for the spectacular views out to sea.

Discover ancient caves

Since the Roman times, the soft rock of Favignana, a form of limestone known as tufa, has been a cornerstone of local industry. The rock attracts tourists with sights such as the old limestone quarries and the curious coastal caves that litter the western coast. Grotta Azzurra is named for the stunning blue waters that flow into the cave; it is said that Grotta dei Sospiri utters sighs during the winter months; and the Grotta degli Innamorati is named for the twin rocks within, entwined against the back wall like lovers.
