Discover Fontane Bianche and Surroundings

Fontane Bianche is a “frazione” (hamlet) of Syracuse, located 12 km away. It lies on the coast south of the city and has a population of about a thousand inhabitants, which increases considerably during the summer season, being primarily a holiday destination. It owes its name to the numerous sources of fresh and clear water, one of which springs on the beach and reaches frigidly under the sand.

History

Before urbanisation, it was a marine and rural hamlet simultaneously. The long beach (still present, and in whose gulf there was a tuna fishery dating from the seventeenth century) was overlooked by farmhouses and land where, among other things, grapes were cultivated from which the renowned Moscato di Siracusa wine was produced, and by a great deal of vegetation consisting, in addition to halophytic plants, steppe and garrigue, also of trees and species of Mediterranean scrub, one of which was the 'Pizzuta' almond tree. In the decades following the Second World War, Fontane Bianche's appearance changed radically. These were the years of the economic and building boom, which favoured the construction of many second homes by the sea by the people of Syracuse.

Characteristics

Fontane Bianche beach, the longest in the Syracuse area, is bordered to the east and west by two rocky ridges. This particular morphology of the territory, similar to a bay, allows you to enjoy an almost always calm and flat sea.

The hamlet is composed almost exclusively of independent villas of various sizes. Thanks to its beaches with light and fine sand, as well as shallow waters particularly suitable for children, Fontane Bianche is a point of reference among the Sicilian seaside areas in the summer season, during which there is  influx of bathers from Syracuse and other Sicilian territories, as well as Italian and foreign tourists.

For leisure, there are several restaurants and pizzerias, a kiosk-bar on the beach also open at night, and a disco. There is also a Medical Guard station, a pharmacy, a Church and a small park that also offers games for children, called Parco Agorà, designed and built on the initiative of some residents. In the summer season, one day a week the "Farmers' Market" takes place, dedicated to the sale of organic products. In addition to the beach, there are also easily accessible rocky areas. The Cassibile river flows into it.

Transport

Since 2008 it has also been accessible by train thanks to the local railway station located on the Syracuse-Gela-Canicattì line. In the 2020 summer season it was included among the eight stops of the "Baroque line" train, which connects eight tourist and characteristic places in eastern Sicily. The hamlet is also served by the A18 (Cassibile) and SS115 junctions, which connect it with the SP104 which crosses this and the other seaside hamlets in the southern area of Syracuse.

Fontane Bianche is well-connected by public transport and can be easily reached by train, as there is a small railway station in the locality.

A few hundred metres away is the town of Cassibile, where the 1943 Armistice was signed, and where you can admire its Old Town with the Church of the noble family of the Marquis Loffredo.

Nearby

From Fontane Bianche, the most famous tourist destinations are easily accessible, such as the picturesque village of Marzamemi, a meeting place for nightlife and great culinary traditions based on fish, the  Vendicari reserve and the beach of Calamosche, Portopalo di Capo Passero, Pozzallo, as well as the most famous Baroque cities named by UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Noto, Modica, Ragusa, Palazzolo Acreide, Syracuse.   With the rapid connection to Catania International Airport, the location can be reached in just under 40 minutes, while in just over an hour you can reach Etna, Taormina, the Alcantara Gorges, Agrigento, Piazza Armerina, Caltagirone.

But Fontane Bianche is not just beach and sea, there is also the good varied cuisine of the area's restaurants, the freshly caught fresh fish, not to mention pizza, almond granita with fragrant and fragrant brioches and artisan ice cream. For your relaxation, therefore, here you will find everything, villas, equipped bathing establishments and beaches, pizzerias, restaurants and services such as markets, pharmacies, bars, shops.
