The South and Southeast regions of Sicily is a particularly magical part of the island as they are home to the spectacular Baroque cities, set against the rugged backdrop of the Iblean Mountains. These eight beauties represent some of the best examples of Baroque architecture to be found in Sicily, making the area an ideal destination for those that appreciate art and culture. Wander the honey-coloured streets and admire the ornate balconies and magnificent facade. Then hop in a car to head out of town and relax on the soft, sandy beaches that litter this part of the coast.

From perky seaside resorts to magnificent Baroque cities, from glittering coastline to archaeological treasures, the south and south-east regions of Sicily offer it all.
Perhaps the most famous of the Baroque cities, Noto is a fairytale kingdom of intricate balconies and glorious buildings built from the dusky stone that typifies the architecture of the south and south-east. Visit in May when the Infiorata is celebrated with mosaics created from flower petals distributed throughout the town.
Another glorious example of Baroque architecture, Modica is built on the slopes of the scenic valleys of the region, an elegant succession of romantically designed buildings and churches carpeting the surrounding hills. Be sure to sample the exquisite dark chocolate of the city – available in a variety of flavours, it makes an excellent treat or gift for those back home.
Stay near this UNESCO World Heritage site for a glimpse into the ancient world of Sicily. With the Neapolis Archaeological Park, the San Giovanni Catacombs and the mesmerising medieval streets of Ortygia located here, Syracuse is the perfect place to soak up the history of the island.
From the south and south-east regions of Sicily, travel up the eastern coast to explore the carnival city of Acireale, brimming with art and culture, or head further north to Taormina, one of the prettiest coastal towns on the island. Alternatively, head west into Sicily’s wine country where you can taste the amber nectar of Marsala and explore more ancient treasures at Agrigento.
